Week 1 Recap:

During our pitch last week, we received feedback from our mentors about our idea. Based on their feedback we decided to change up our idea for our perfume commercial a little bit.

Some of the feedback we received was...

- Try not to have the ingredients go into the bottle it may seem cheap or too much like a glade or food commercial

- Stay away from food ingredients for the same reason

- Try to keep elegance in mind

- Have the ingredients around the bottle

- Good lighting references

Based on these critques we changed our idea quite a bit, we decided to get rid of the food elements and the effect of the ingredients going into the bottle altogether. Instead, we decided to just stick with the flowers because they are very elegant in nature.

Updated idea and Storyboard:

For our new idea, we wanted to start with a single flower laying on the table, and then magical particles begin to float in which trigger the flower to begin to multiply into different flowers and beautiful leaves all around. As the commercial continues flowers begin to grow and the perfume bottle is eventually revealed in a close-up shot panning up the sparkly particles swirling around it. The flowers continue pulsing and growing up the bottle. In the final shot, you see the bottle shining with flowers all around it and it spritzes the air.

Below is the storyboard I created which demonstrates the concept and details of the effects and camera moves.

Updates on Research and Development:

Being that our idea had changed we had to do some more research on our effects. We all searched for tutorials that would best help us achieve the effects we want like the blooming flowers and growing vines as well as tutorials for lighting and rendering. I compiled them all in a document so we could all access them. The document is linked below.

This commercial is probably our biggest inspiration we really love the multiplying flower effect we want to achieve a similar effect however much less dense and a little more delicate.

3D Previs:

(Payton Schade)

Beginning the 3D previs this week I began previsualization of a growing fern leaf by following this tutorial by UponaDream Studios on Youtube. He made the tutorial based on Rich Nosworthy's In Bloom course which was suggested to take a look at by the mentors last week.

After following this tutorial on creating the unfurling plant I think that we will be able to instance the same method for making other types of vines or plants grow. Below is my previs of the plant unfurling. One issue I did have was the noise I used to vary the colors in the leaves moves through the leaves so that is something I will need to troubleshoot in the future.

Here is my pre-vis next to my references

Hao Xiang began working on the 3D previs of a blooming flower which he used to create a 3D version of the storyboard, featured below.

Studio Background Shoot:

Hailey did some research on shooting our live plates. We decided we wanted a light wood ground and a white fabric backdrop to keep the audience focused on the product. I have a light-colored wooden table that we will be using. I shot a picture of my roommate's vintage perfume bottles on it in the sunlight so you can get a better idea of what it'll look like in the shots.

She had a perfume bottle also that was almost identical to our previous references. This can better help us match lighting and textures with real-life references.
